Fatwa on Boredom and Drudgery

Where I live, there isn’t much to do at all. Yeah, I’ve got my work and my college preparation stuff, but that doesn’t count for what I’m talking about. We have a navy base on the island that has a movie theater and a bowling ally, but of course, that’s only good for you if your family is in the military. This leaves me and my friends with pretty much nothing to do. We play Dungeons and Dragons, but man can’t live on Dungeons and Dragons alone (and getting the whole group together like that is hard, and can only happen once or twice a week at most). The only other thing to do is drive into San Diego to go see a movie, but that’s expensive.

There are a couple things that I’d like to start doing again though, and hopefully this will catch some the attention of some of my friends that are possibly feeling the same boredom and restlessness.

  1. Swimming! I’ve always loved racing in the water, but I never joined a swim team as a kid since I was too shy to wear a speedo and didn’t know about jammers. I still want to race people, and really, just getting in the pool for a while is fun. It would be more fun go swimming with other people though. It’s starting to get warm again too, so if we just want to splash around, then we could go to the beach. Cost: $0, as long as you already have a bathing suit.
  2. Working out! I bought myself a home gym machine and built it in my room, which means that I can work out for free while watching movies on my computer. I’m also thinking about getting a fold-up workout bike. If any of you have been wanting to get in shape and would have more fun with somebody as a workout partner who won’t make them feel embarrassed (this is basically physical therapy for me, so we can both be pathetic together in the privacy of my room without shame), then give me a call. Think of it as a free gym, but with surround sound speakers. Cost: $0.
  3. Baseball! Alright, so there’s no way that I’m going to get a full team together, and it definitely wouldn’t be super competitive (I don’t really want to have to deal with somebody throwing the ball as hard and fast as possible at me when they’re pitching). Just small, casual games with a few people. Maybe it would just be me and somebody else taking throwing the ball for the other to hit. But eventually, maybe the group would grow. But it should stay really relaxed, so even people that don’t typically like baseball could still come and have fun just hitting the ball. Cost: $0, unless we decide to get gloves later on.
  4. Frisbee! We used to get together in the park to toss a frisbee around, and sometimes we’d even get a game of ultimate frisbee going. Sometimes the games got a little bit too serious though, so hopefully that super serious mindset could be avoided. I think it would be fun if we could start doing this again though. Cost: $0.

Obviously, this post is an invitation to my personal friends. If that’s you, then let’s figure out something to do, because I get the feeling that pretty much everybody in our group has all but resigned themselves to boredom and drudgery. Boredom and drudgery are evil. Let’s fight evil. I declare a fatwa on boredom and drudgery!

Bad ideas… if you do even one of those you risk a tear in dimensional space. Boredom and drudgery keep the universe a safer place.

Nathan, I’ve got it set up so that I can play video games in my room while working out. It’s wonderful.

so how does wii bowling work on a treadmill/

Who said anything about a treadmill? The thing I’ve got is more like an imitation Bowflex, so you can just sit and do leg exercises while having your upper body free to to do whatever. And if I get a workout bike (or if I got a treadmill like you’re talking about, which isn’t going to happen), then same idea, since I’d imagine you could still pump your legs while holding a controller.
